Welcome to Nurse Ascent, a twice-weekly newsletter created by nurses for nurses
This week, we’re covering major labor developments as the Kaiser Permanente strike enters its second week and NYC nurses continue historic walkouts over staffing and safety. We also break down why the American Nurses Association is pushing back on a new federal proposal that could impact how nursing degrees are classified — and what it could mean for APRNs and future funding.
Plus, as always, we’re highlighting open nursing roles across the country for nurses ready to make a move, level up, or explore what’s next.
Kaiser Permanente Nurses Strike Enters Second Week
Tens of thousands of Kaiser Permanente nurses and healthcare workers across California and Hawaii have moved into the second week of an open-ended strike over safe staffing levels, fair wages, and stalled contract negotiations, with picket lines active at dozens of facilities and union leadership calling for enforceable staffing protections amid widespread political support.
NYC Nurses Continue Historic Strike, Plan March on Gov. Office
Nearly 15,000 New York City nurses have marked the fourth week of their strike, planning a march to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office as bargaining with major hospital systems continues without a final contract — nurses are pressing for improved staffing, workplace safety protections, and better pay.
ANA Pushes Back as Dept. of Education Continues to Exclude Nursing from "Professional Degree" Definition
The American Nurses Association issued a sharp response after the U.S. Department of Education moved forward with a proposal that excludes nursing from the definition of "professional degree" programs—a classification tied to federal graduate student loan limits. The rationale goes so far as to assert that APRNs are not part of a distinct profession. ANA rejects this characterization entirely, noting that nearly 250,000 nurses signed a petition demanding inclusion. The public comment period is now open, and ANA is urging nurses and educators to make their voices heard at RNAction.org before the rule is finalized.
