Understaffed, On Strike, and Moving North: This Week's Nurse News + Jobs
Your twice-weekly roundup of nursing news, work trends, and opportunities
Welcome to Nurse Ascent, a twice-weekly newsletter created by nurses for nurses. This week: top nursing roles across the country, plus the headlines shaping your profession — from a major study linking understaffing to patient outcomes, to the six-month nurse strike still unresolved in Michigan, to why over 1,000 U.S. nurses have headed north to Canada.
Study Links Nurse Understaffing to Higher Risk of Patient Death and Readmissions
A newly published study out of Japan is reinforcing what nurses have long known from experience. Researchers analyzed more than 77,000 hospital admissions across 82 acute care wards and found that patients exposed to nurse understaffing — particularly during day shifts — faced a significantly higher risk of in-hospital mortality and readmission compared to those who received care under adequate staffing levels. The study adds to a growing body of international evidence tying safe nurse-to-patient ratios directly to patient outcomes, and comes at a moment when staffing debates remain front and center in U.S. healthcare policy.
No Deal in Sight as 750 Teamster Nurses Continue Strike at Henry Ford Genesys
Approximately 750 nurses and case managers at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Michigan have reached the six-month mark of their strike with no resolution in sight. While the hospital has offered a 13% wage increase and safe staffing terms, the union remains at an impasse over nurse-to-patient ratios and seniority protections in a return-to-work agreement. Despite the involvement of federal and state mediators, the facility continues to operate with temporary staffing as both sides remain deadlocked.
U.S. Nurses Choosing Canada Amid Workforce Concerns
A surge of American nurses is moving to Canada — particularly British Columbia — citing dissatisfaction with U.S. healthcare policy under the Trump administration, the proposed reclassification of nursing as a nonprofessional degree, and deep cuts to public health funding. KFF Health News and NPR report that more than 1,000 U.S.-trained nurses have been approved for licensure in British Columbia since April 2025, raising concerns about talent loss amid domestic staffing shortages.
