Nurse Spotlight: Sasha S. MSN, RN

What I do for work

l am a registered nurse, soon to be family nurse practitioner, currently working in the Progressive Care Unit at the only acute care hospital in Maui. I recently earned my master's degree and am scheduled to take my board exam in April.

How I got here

I was a travel nurse for over four years mostly during the COVID era. During one contract in Maui, I fell in love with the hospital, the community and the patient population. After I finished NP school, I took another travel contract there and accepted a full-time staff position on the PCU. I enjoy PCU because I feel like it is a great middle ground for patient acuity. Our ratios are usually three to one and I enjoy the challenge of being able to practice skills and use increased critical thinking, but not in as high intensity as the ICU. I love progressive care and will continue working there per-diem even as I transition to my new practitioner role.

NYC Nurses' Strike: Mount Sinai & Montefiore Ratify Contracts; NewYork-Presbyterian Holds Out

Nurses at Mount Sinai and Montefiore voted overwhelmingly to approve new three-year contracts and will return to work this weekend. But NewYork-Presbyterian nurses rejected their deal and remain on strike—now Day 32—citing concerns over staffing enforcement language.

Measles Outbreak Continues: South Carolina Reports 933 Cases; National Count Likely Higher Than CDC's 733

The South Carolina outbreak centered in Spartanburg County is now the largest single-state cluster since measles was eliminated in 2000. The CDC's national count (733 as of Feb. 5) lags behind state-level reporting. Mobile vaccination units are deploying across the region as cases spread to schools and new counties.

AI-assisted mammograms might cut risk of cancer

A recent study published in The Lancet suggests that AI-supported screening might help reduce interval breast cancers, detect more cancers, and make screening more efficient for radiologists. The study notes the AI-supported screening also increased the sensitivity which resulted in a higher cancer detection rate without increasing false-positive findings.

More on Sasha

A day in my life

I recently got a job as a clinical nursing instructor at the only university on the island, so I will be taking nursing students to the hospital and teaching them how to be a nurse. We’ll be practicing skills, how to use critical thinking, how to look at labs, how to communicate between all the different departments including: therapy, providers, family, etc. l've been using my free time outside of school to plant seeds in the nursing world outside of my traditional bedside role, in addition to studying for my next transition as to an APRN.

My self-care routine

A day in my life would consist of waking up, getting some morning sun, going for a walk on the beach or at the park. During the day, I enjoy paddle boarding, hiking, and yoga. I love massage, sound baths and breath work. Anything holistic medicine is my go-to for self-care.
