Headlines in Healthcare

HIPAA updates tackle cybersecurity, but what about AI?

Long-awaited updates to HIPAA could soon require healthcare organizations to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures such as multi-factor authentication, encryption, continuous system monitoring, and regular security testing, according to Healthcare Brew. While experts welcome the changes, some warn that regulations may still be struggling to keep pace with rapidly advancing AI tools that increasingly handle sensitive patient information. For nurses, the updates could mean stronger protections for patient data, but also new questions about how AI-powered tools are governed in clinical settings.

GE HealthCare wants nurses to understand AI, not just use it

GE HealthCare has launched a free 20-hour healthcare AI training program designed to help clinicians better understand the technology increasingly being integrated into patient care, according to Healthcare Brew. The company says nurses and other healthcare professionals don't need to become data scientists, but they should understand how AI tools reach conclusions and support clinical decisions. The initiative comes as AI adoption accelerates across healthcare, from documentation tools to medical imaging and decision support systems.

Major nursing groups sue over graduate loan limits

The American Nurses Association and nine other nursing organizations have filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new Department of Education rule that excludes nursing from the federal government's "professional degree" designation, according to Nurse.org. If the rule takes effect on July 1, graduate nursing students pursuing roles such as nurse practitioner, CRNA, nurse midwife, and clinical nurse specialist could face a lifetime federal loan cap of $100,000, compared to $200,000 for students in fields like medicine and law. Nursing leaders argue the policy could create new barriers to advanced education and worsen existing healthcare workforce shortages.
