Nurse Spotlight: Lainey Kopinga CNM, NP
What I do for work
I am a nurse practitioner and certified nurse midwife. I started a postpartum agency, Lavender Lane Midwifery & Women’s Wellness, that connects families with postpartum care specialists and birth doulas. I also have another company, OB Maternity Academy, that does doula training and certification as well as other courses across the board in maternal health. We are a CEU provider with the BRN.
I’m originally from Ghana, West Africa & the way that we do postpartum care there is very different from in the US. The communities that hire me the most are of Asian decent or second generations families that grew up in the US but still had strong connections to another culture. The more that I studied traditional Asian postpartum care, the more I liked it, so my agency specializes in that model of care.
How I got here
I always grew up thinking I wanted to be an obstetrician but by the time I got to college I felt I didn’t want to take science classes for so long so I ended up becoming a business major instead. When I was in graduate school for business, I realized I really did want to work in maternal health. When I researched the different pathways, midwifery jumped out to me especially since midwifes are so globally recognized. This fit because I knew I wanted to work with a diverse female population. I became an NP and midwife and as I was working with patients, the one things that stuck out to me was that when I would see them for postpartum care they were just rattled, tired and exhausted.
When I gave birth to my twins, we had that traditional West African model where someone comes to live with you for 3 months and takes care of you and the baby, which really blessed my husband and me. This experience made me want everyone to experience this and to know what it feels like to have support at this stage. After I had my third child, I started my company, in part because I was ready to stop waking up in the middle of the night to deliver babies.

IV saline recalled for fiberglass contamination
The U.S. FDA has recalled bags of intravenous saline over concerns that the solution may contain fiberglass particles, which could potentially cause blood clots, organ damage or death if administered to patients. According to Forbes News, this includes two lots of 0.9% NaCl, a commonly used sterile medical saline solution supplied by Baxter International in 500ml plastic bags. IV saline is one of the most widely used medical fluids and contaminants from the solution placed in the bloodstream can have serious consequences.
Four new West Nile cases in San Diego
San Diego county has confirmed its fourth human case of West Nile virus this year, leading health officials to urge residents to take precautions against mosquito bites as the peak season from viral transmission approaches. Most people infected with West Nile virus never develop symptoms, but in rare cases, the virus can spread to the brain or nervous system and become life-threatening, KPBS News reports.
Lawsuit to restrict abortion access on hold in TX & FL
A federal judge paused a lawsuit ​by Florida and Texas seeking to severely limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone nationwide while Trump's administration completes a review of the drug's safety. The lawsuit, which was filed last December, questions the FDA's initial approval of the drug in 2000 as well as ​regulations adopted under Presidents Obama and Biden that expanded access to the drug. This includes a 2023 rule allowing mifepristone to be delivered through mail. A judge in April also put a hold on a separate lawsuit by the state of Louisiana challenging that ​same regulation.

A day in my life
My most important role is mom. I start my days by making breakfast for my family, getting the kids off to school and my husband off to work. Then I typically try my best to get a work out in. After, I’ll settle in with my team either in my office in Irvine, Beverly Hills or my home office. Together we’ll go through online course registration, fielding inquiries for families that are looking for postpartum care, speaking with potential clients to connect them with doulas, as well as preparing for live courses in other regions. Right now I’m in Toronto to teach a live training.
My self-care routine
Spending time with my family is my number one. I have a set of twins who are 11 and a son who is 8. They are all really active in sports and the 5 of us have a really good time as a family together. My extended family lives nearby in San Diego and we connect with them a lot too. I try to get a regular swim or another form of work out in. I love spas and try to go to a new spa, especially spas from different cultures like Korean, Chinese and Moroccan spas in the area.
