Headlines in Healthcare
59% of nurses may skip grad school under DOE loan change
A new nationwide poll finds that 59% of nurses say they’re now less likely to pursue a graduate degree because of the DOE’s reduced borrowing limits for advanced nursing programs. Nurse.org reports that respondents overwhelmingly oppose the decision, warning it will deter future students, shrink the advanced-practice pipeline, and worsen patient-care shortages.
Federal loan rule change worries nursing students
Nursing students nationwide are raising concerns after the Department of Education removed nursing from the list of graduate programs eligible for higher federal loan limits. Nurse.org reports that beginning in 2026, advanced nursing students will face lower borrowing caps that may no longer match rising tuition costs. Nursing groups warn this could worsen the ongoing workforce shortage and place advanced practice degrees out of reach for many.
Texas students fear loan caps will derail careers
Houston nursing students say new federal limits on graduate student loans could prevent them from completing their degrees. The Houston Chronicle reports that many students worry the reduced caps won’t cover tuition and living expenses, particularly for those from low-income families. Nursing leaders warn the change could further reduce the pipeline of new nurses as Texas hospitals continue facing staffing shortages.
