What I do for work
I’m a new grad working in medical-surgical & telemetry unit in a community-based hospital in Los Angeles. I’m about 5 months into working as a RN and love being a nurse!
How I got here
I originally wanted to become a pharmacist so my first bachelors is in biochemistry. I ended up working a couple of years in a high volume orthopedic clinic for about 5 years, two of those years being during the COVID pandemic. It was during that time I was exposed to so many career paths in healthcare and decided that my personal goal and mission in life was to become a nurse and help those most in need. I changed gears and completed an accelerated bachelors in nursing this January and was so fortunate to be hired at the hospital where I completed 3 out of 9 of my clinical rotations.

Michigan reports first 2 deaths in cyclospora outbreak
Two people in Michigan have died after contracting cyclosporiasis during the largest outbreak of this illness the US has ever seen. The outbreak originally started in June and in Michigan alone, there are up to 11,000 cases so far. Health officials explain that cuts to federal health agencies make it difficult to track and manage the outbreak, AP News reports. As of now, they explain that lettuce or salad greens may be behind the parasitic outbreak, with the broader outbreak possibly linked to Taylor Farms.
HHS Secretary RFK Jr. interviewed on CNN
RFK Jr. was interviewed on CNN where he pinned the blame for pandemic lockdowns on Dr. Anthony Fauci. He shared that Donald Trump, who was in office at the beginning of the pandemic, was not to blame for the government’s response. Health experts, conversely stated he notably downplayed the virus when he was in office in the early months of the pandemic. CNN offered fact checking following the interview and noted the lockdowns were overseen by state and local leaders who were responding to ICUs being overwhelmed and hospitals asking for help to get control of the situation in the early stages of the pandemic.
Taylor Farms pulls jalapeno products from grocery stores
Taylor Farms is now pulling more than a dozen products with jalapenos from grocery stores across the US. It’s the latest recall as part of the salmonella outbreak that has made 345 people sick in 27 states. The list of 20 recalled foods includes dips, salsas and guacamole sold at grocery stores including Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Kroger. Taylor Farms, the massive food producer, is also linked to the record cyclosporiasis outbreak across the US. This all underscores their broad reach within the U.S. food system. According to ABC News, last year the company made 40% of all salad kits sold in the U.S. and accounted for 265 million servings of fresh vegetables to Americans per week.

A day in my life
I work day shift so my day typically starts with a 4:00 a.m. alarm. I actually only live about 7 minutes away from my hospital but I like to start my day out with a light breakfast and iced coffee in the quietness of my home before I go to work since it can get so chaotic. Our shift goes from 6:45 a.m. - 7:15 p.m. I receive report from night shift, update the white boards, and introduce myself to my patients for the day. Then I spend the first hour looking at patient charts to fully understand the reason for their hospitalization and what’s potentially to come for them. After 9:00 a.m. med pass I finally usually get a chance to chart and update care plans for the day. The rest of the day can typically vary, including blood glucose checks and just getting patients ready for any procedures or diagnostics they may have lined up. A big part of my day is about education and making sure my patients understand all of the information provided to them.
My self-care routine
Elle Woods once said “endorphins make people happy, and happy people don’t kill their husbands” which I really take to heart. So on my days off I like to get at least an hour to hour and half of gym time in where I rehab my mind and body from working in a career that I think is all about giving. I really enjoy going into the sauna to relax, practice my mindful breathing, and to ground myself so that I can be my absolute best for my future patients. Other than that, I really enjoy cooking so will usually spend my days recipe searching then shopping for all of the ingredients to try out new foods!
