Nurse Spotlight: Nicholas R. BSN, RN
What I do for work
I am honored to work as a Hospice RN Case Manager. Hospice nursing has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with patients and families while providing comfort focused care during one of the most significant chapters of their lives. My role involves supporting patients emotionally, educating families, advocating for patient wishes, and ensuring dignity and quality of life throughout their end-of-life journey. Hospice has taught me the importance of presence, compassion, and the profound impact that simple acts of kindness can have on patients and loved ones.
How I got here
My path to nursing was inspired by one of my closest childhood friends who became a mentor and role model in my life. I admired their compassion, dedication, and ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others which eventually inspired me to began to see nursing not just as a profession, but as an opportunity to serve, advocate, and provide comfort during some of life's most vulnerable moments. I began my career as a new graduate RN in the Emergency Department. Every shift presented unique situations that required quick decision making, teamwork, and compassionate care for patients experiencing emergencies and unexpected health crises. The Emergency Department served as the foundation of my nursing practice and helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Headlines in Healthcare
Parasite in raw food causing diarrhea across several states
A parasite causing intense diarrhea has been spreading across the US, CNN reports. Cyclosporiasis is caused by a single-cell parasite that’s carried in human feces. It gets into food when water contaminated with feces is sprayed on crops. Health officials have found cases across 17 states including Texas, Florida, New York, Michigan and others. According to the CDC, there have been 145 cases reported nationwide by 17 states between May 1 and June 16, and at least 20 of those have been hospitalized. Michigan alone has reported almost 600 cases as of July 4, when they usually report 50 cases per year.
Secret shopper for GLP-1 drugs finds gaps in prescriptions
New research suggests that prescription for GLP-1 medications come with surprisingly little medical oversight. Colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine created a simulated patient profile that met the criteria for a GLP-1 prescription and used it to seek prescriptions from 49 websites between August and December 2025, U.S. News reports. They found that 45 sites decided to prescribe the medication and 34 followed through in mailing it. Medical experts warn that limited clinician involvement could increase the risk of medical and financial harm.
Outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Upper East Side NYC
New York City health officials are investigating a cluster of 23 confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of bacterial pneumonia, on Manhattan's Upper East Side. So far, there have been in 17 hospitalizations with the likely source of the bacteria a contaminated cooling tower in the area. New York Health Department says they are investigating the 160 cooling towers across this specific region and plan to hold another town hall this week to answer questions for the public.

A day in my life
A typical day as a Hospice RN Case Manager begins early in the morning by reviewing and responding to emails, checking physician orders, reviewing patient updates, and coordinating care with the interdisciplinary team. Throughout the day, I travel to visit my patients in their homes, assisted living facilities, or skilled nursing facilities. During these visits, I perform comprehensive assessments, manage symptoms, evaluate medication effectiveness, and address any concerns that patients or families may have. I spend time teaching patients and caregivers about disease progression, symptom management, medication administration, as well as what to expect throughout the hospice journey. I communicate regularly with physicians, social workers, chaplains, home health aides, and other members of the hospice team to ensure every patient's physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are addressed.
My self-care routine
Outside of nursing, I prioritize self care and maintaining a healthy work life balance. I enjoy lifting weights and running, which help me stay physically strong and mentally focused. Exercise provides an outlet to manage stress and recharge after emotionally demanding days. Music is another important part of my life, and I find joy in playing both the guitar and piano. Whether learning new songs, practicing familiar pieces, or simply playing to relax, music offers a creative and therapeutic escape that helps me remain grounded and balanced. My nursing journey has been shaped by mentorship, growth, and a passion for serving others. From the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Department to the deeply personal and compassionate work of hospice care, I am grateful for every experience that has helped me become the nurse I am today.
