Headlines in Healthcare
95% of CDC workers say agency overhaul will cost lives
A survey of 624 current and former CDC employees conducted by Michigan State University researchers found that 95% of respondents believe recent changes at the agency will cost American lives, according to Becker's Hospital Review. The participants, representing roughly 5% of the total workforce, expressed significant concern regarding the impact of the restructuring on public health outcomes. This internal dissent comes amid broader trends showing declining public trust in the agency.
NC bill would cap nonprofit hospital CEO pay
A North Carolina Senate committee recently endorsed legislation that would cap nonprofit hospital CEO compensation at 400 times the salary of the lowest-paid full-time employee, according to Becker's Hospital Review. While the bill originally contained provisions related to hospital system mergers, those sections were removed before committee approval. The proposed bill also includes a ban on noncompete clauses for physicians, marking a significant regulatory push in the state's healthcare landscape.
Medicare Advantage Patients hospitalized 11% longer
Medicare Advantage patients remained in the hospital 11.2% longer on average than those in traditional Medicare during fiscal 2024, according to a new report from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. The commission's findings also highlighted significant billing concerns, noting that Medicare improper payments totaled an estimated $56.7 billion, with $23.7 billion of that amount linked to Medicare Advantage plans.
