Headlines in Healthcare

For-profit hospitals face higher mortality risks

University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing researchers found patients at for-profit hospitals experience higher 30-day mortality and readmission rates. The study links these poor outcomes to persistent nurse understaffing, as nurses at these facilities frequently report unsafe staffing levels.

NP starting salaries plateau at $180,000

Nurse practitioners face stagnant compensation as starting salaries held steady at $180,000 for 2025-26, according to an AMN Healthcare white paper. Despite this pause in growth, demand for the role remains high as nurse practitioners ranked as the most-requested search assignment for the sixth consecutive year. This data suggests that while financial growth has leveled off, the critical need for advanced practice clinicians continues to rise.

Virtual nursing program reduces bedside workload

Owensboro Health implemented a virtual nursing program to handle admissions, discharge planning, and medication checks, allowing floor nurses to focus on direct patient care. According to Becker's Hospital Review, this initiative uses Optum technology to address the competing demands bedside staff often face. The model enables virtual teams to manage administrative tasks while keeping bedside nurses at the patient's side.
