Headlines in Healthcare

Staffing is still a breaking point for nurses

Staffing remains the top issue facing nurses in 2026, with hospital systems continuing to push “more patients with less staff,” Mary Turner, president of National Nurses United, tells Healthcare Brew. Nurse leaders say crisis-level staffing from the pandemic has become the norm, contributing to burnout and nurses leaving the bedside. There is also growing concern about AI being introduced without nursing input, raising questions about safety and decision-making on the floor.

Nurse strikes continue across the country

Nurse strikes are ongoing or planned across multiple states, from Michigan to Massachusetts to Oregon, according to Nurse.org. One of the most prolonged is at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Michigan, while recent actions in New York included one of the largest nursing strikes in the city’s history. Across the board, staffing ratios, pay, and working conditions remain the core issues driving these walkouts.

Fraud scandal shuts down major forensic nursing org.

A $1.2 million fraud scandal has forced the International Association of Forensic Nurses to shut down after more than 30 years, according to Nurse.org. Its 6,000 members will now transition to the Emergency Nurses Association, raising questions about how the specialty will maintain its identity within a larger organization.
