Headlines in Healthcare

Illinois nurses union sues Prime, Ascension over alleged understaffing

Members of the Illinois Nurses Association at Saint Joseph Medical Center have filed a lawsuit against Ascension and Prime Healthcare, alleging that chronic understaffing has resulted in unsafe working conditions and emotional distress. The complaint, filed by four nurses on behalf of the union, claims the hospital systems failed to adhere to mandatory staffing plans required under Illinois law. The plaintiffs are now seeking both compensatory and punitive damages for the alleged regulatory failures, as reported by Becker’s.

When nurses work 2 jobs, no one tracks the total hours

With estimates suggesting that anywhere from 15% to 50% of nurses are working second jobs, health system leaders face an invisible challenge regarding staffing fatigue. Medscape reports that current internal scheduling safeguards are largely incapable of tracking total hours worked across different employers, creating a significant patient safety blind spot. As a result, CNOs and clinical administrators are struggling to monitor the cumulative impact of these additional shifts on bedside care and staff burnout.

California Is Offering Free CNA Training to Fight the Caregiver Shortage

A California senior care provider has launched a free CNA training program that pays employees to earn certification while working. With the state facing a projected shortage of hundreds of thousands of caregivers over the next decade, healthcare leaders are increasingly looking at "earn while you learn" pathways to grow the nursing workforce from within.
