One night nurse celebrates a decade of being an RN

Welcome to Nurse Ascent, a twice-weekly newsletter created by nurses, for nurses. This week, a night nurse shares reflections after celebrating a decade as an RN and what inspires her to care for others. We also cover recent wins from a Planned Parenthood lawsuit, the effects of vaccine program cuts & how one homeless shelter is managing alcoholism by prescribing beer and wine.

But first, we celebrate the little things...

Nurse Spotlight: Andrea Noble RN, BSN

What I do for work

I’m a Medical-Surgical nurse and just recently celebrated 10 years as an RN! While reflecting on this decade of nursing, I remembered being a child in the garden with my grandma. She asked me if I would take care of her when she grew old and it was that moment I first realized my innate love of caring for others and what ignited my dream to be a nurse.

How I got here

I first worked NOC shift on a Med-Surg Telemetry floor for 7 years where we specialized in orthopedic and bariatric surgeries. After, I briefly transferred to a larger hospital to work on a PCU transplant unit, but quickly burnt out from being understaffed with critically ill patients. On the bright side, this led me to find a position on a newly opened Medical-Surgical overflow unit where the patients and the staff are highly advocated for. The support from healthy working environment helped me reconnect with what I love most about nursing - having the time to truly care for connect with my patients.

More on Andrea Noble

A day in my life

Because I work NOC shift and also have a young daughter, a day in my life involves carefully balancing my daytime and nighttime routines. If I didn’t work the night before, I wake up early to be with my daughter before dropping her off at school. I come home to do any chores and meal prep before usually sleeping 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. to rest before work that night. I wake up in time to see my daughter after her school day and before I leave for work. I’m usually home by 9am after my shift to do it all over again!

My self-care routine (or what I do for fun, or to relax)

This position on this new unit has helped me so much regain work/life balance. I’ve recently gotten back into yoga twice a week at the gym and love to unwind by going out to brunch and coffee dates with friends. At home, I love to hang out with my daughter in the backyard to spend some quality time together outside.

Headlines in Healthcare

Planned Parenthood Win

This week, a federal judge ruled against the administration's attempt to defund Planned Parenthood by preventing it from receiving funding from Medicaid. The judge shared that restricting care will lead to adverse health consequences. Planned Parenthood warned that the cut in funding would force 200 clinics to close across the country, leaving 1 million patients without healthcare.

Vaccine Service Cuts

State and local vaccination programs are experiencing loss after a review by HHS pulled millions of dollars. These programs state that they will have to makes cuts to both staff and services while already struggling to address an increase in vaccine-preventable diseases. This includes whooping cough, which has sickened more than 100,000 and killed 5 children in the U.S. this year, as well as the measles outbreak which has already killed 3 in the US.

On the House

This homeless shelter in Ontario, Canada treats alcoholics to beer and wine through a managed alcohol program they say is saving lives. This harm-reduction program helps people stabilize their alcoholism by using a medically regulated administration of alcohol. The program shares that these structured servings significantly reduce the amount of alcohol consumed at one time, resulting in a drastic reduction in their overall consumption until they are able to refrain from alcohol consumption completely.
