Nursing Jobs + Creating a Spa-Like Experience for Patients

Pampering in Healthcare

Bringing a spa-like experience to patients seeking treatment for chronic health conditions

Welcome to Nurse Ascent, a twice-weekly newsletter created by nurses, for nurses. This week, one nurse shares how she finds a way to pamper patients while treating their chronic health conditions. We also share available nursing jobs, and cover the end of the Texas measles outbreak, the mental health benefits of a wolf dog playdate, and findings of potentially radioactive shrimp.

But first, how are those supply-chain delays going? 🧤

Nurse Spotlight: Kelly Salutregui RN, BSN

What I do for work

I work at a private IV infusion clinic where there is normally one RN on site as the only medical personnel. I do prescription medications (we call them biologics) that act on people’s immune systems. We have about 80% GI patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's and other IBD conditions who get these biologic medications to help reduce inflammation and put them into remission. We also see patients with MS, lupus, migraines, anemia.

How I got here

My first RN job was on an orthopedic trauma floor that essentially became the COVID unit during the beginning stages of the pandemic. It was a very hard time in my life physically, mentally, and emotionally that led me to question why I became a nurse. Ultimately I did learn a lot having my foundational years be in that kind of setting and it also helped open my eyes to see that there are other nursing careers out there (like the one I’m in now!) and that I don’t necessarily need to give up on the field entirely after burn out.

More on Kelly Salutregui

A day in my life

When a patient comes into the clinic, I do a very light assessment mainly to ensure they don’t have an active infection. I start their IV before mixing or reconstituting the medication and starting their infusion. Infusions can last anywhere between 20 minutes to 6 hours and patient will often opt to turn the lights down and relax during this time. Our company has redesigned infusions clinics to have a spa-like experience where patients each have their own private suite, TV and Netflix. Many patients come on a monthly basis and this has helped me become very close with my patients, which has been so rewarding.

My self-care routine (or what I do for fun)

I believe self-care is super important because I know nurses can often pour from an empty cup. I personally really enjoy working out to clear my head. I often work out in our home gym area, listen to music and go for walks. We also have a little family cabin in the woods that is our absolute happy place where we go to disconnect and reset. On the weekends we drive a couple hours to our cabin where I usually turn my phone off to spend quality time with my daughter and my husband.

Headlines in Healthcare

Outbreak Over

The measles outbreak in Texas that sickened 762 people has been declared over by state officials. The last person to have outbreak related case of measles reported a rash on July 1, more than 42 days ago, which is the threshold used by officials to declare endings to outbreaks.

Wolf Sanctuary

A wolf dog sanctuary in Montgomery, Texas offers a "non-traditional" therapy program for veterans experiencing PTSD. The sanctuary is part of a movement to rescue abused and abandoned wolf dogs across the country and give them the proper care they need. This sanctuary organized playdates with veterans and the wolf dogs, sharing that many feel the breed's increased sensitivity gives them the ability to relate to those who experienced trauma.

Radioactive Shrimp

The FDA has warned the public to avoid eating certain frozen shrimp sold at Walmart due to concerns of it being contaminated with radioactive material. Health official state the shipping containers potentially contaminated with Cesium-137 delivered products in thirteen states, including: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
