Patient Advocacy with a Flexible Schedule
This nurse when from a fast-paced hospital setting to the comforts of working remote
Welcome to Nurse Ascent, a twice-weekly newsletter created by nurses for nurses. This week one nurse shares in the freedom in flexibility as a remote patient advocate. We also discuss a vote for continued ACA subsidies, a growing measles outbreak, as well as a physician who is teaching how to prevent the cycle of shame in healthcare.
But first, it's that time of year again...

Nurse Spotlight: Anne Denk RN, BSN
What I do for work
I currently am working as a nurse patient advocate at a health start up called Solace. My work is very similar to that of a case manager. I help patients navigate health care, their health insurance plans and make sure they have what they need to navigate their health journey. I make sure they have follow up appointments with their primary care provider, that they have orders written for any medications they may need, I help coordinate care between the PCP, specialists, physical therapists, and other providers. I also help over come barriers to care such as lack of transportation or lack of funding for medication. I help connect patients with resources in their local communicates like food pantries or volunteer organizations that perform home modifications.
How I got here
My initial background in nursing was in oncology. I did a rotation on an oncology unit during nursing school and really loved how people there worked as a real team. I did that for 6 years, with 2 as a travel nurse. After that I wanted to move away from the 12-hour shift as well as limit my exposure to chemotherapy. I learned about a job in case management during one of my travel nursing assignment and I applied to case management jobs. From there, I worked in case management in the hospital setting, clinics, for workers comp, and now work remotely with Solace.

A day in my life
In this remote role I work with patients nationwide, I found I have to prioritize east coast patients first (since I live on the west coast) to make sure I catch the doctor’s office before they close. This work as a patient advocate is somewhat similar to the roles I’ve done in case management in that we have to understand where the patient is coming from: What’s their understanding of their health? What kind of support do they have at home? How do they get transportation to appointments? Do they have mobility equipment at home? When I worked case management in the hospital, it was so face paced and now the outpatient/remote setting is more flexible because things aren’t as urgent.
What I do for fun & to relax
I like to go work out at the end of the day or go to a jazzercise class a few times of the week to help get my mind off of work things. I make sure to schedule in time with friends and family. Throughout the month I make sure I have 1-2 things scheduled with friends. Fortunately I have a similar schedule to my husband so we’re able to spend quality time most days of the week.

Headlines in Healthcare
House to vote to extend ACA subsidies
Four Republicans broke from Speaker Johnson to signed onto a Democratic-led petition that will force a House vote on extending for three years an enhanced pandemic-era subsidy that lowers health insurance costs for millions of Americans, AP News reports. This comes shortly after another proposed bill that did not address the increase in premiums that millions of people will soon endure when the tax credits for those who buy insurance through the Affordable Care Act expire at year’s end.
Growing measles outbreak in South Carolina
A measles outbreak in Spartanburg, SC has grown to 130 cases and hundreds more quarantined and might makes its way into Charlotte. This is part of a broader surge that has pushed U.S. cases to their highest level in decades, according to a report by Axios. Measles symptoms can include: fever, runny nose, cough, rash, and red eyes.
Physician teaches to stop shame cycle
A physician launched an initiative with The Shame Lab, a research and training partnership to teach health care providers about stopping the perpetuation of the shame cycle, noting that if providers felt shamed throughout their medical education, it normalizes that as the process. He shared with NPR that the goal is to help future physicians recognize the emotion in themselves and others, so they don't perpetuate the cycle.
